A Guide to The Link Between Male Infertility and The Gym

Exercise is key to staying fit and maintaining a healthy weight. But not many are aware that the best exercise for male fertility isn’t excessive exercise. There’s also proof that specific exercises, such as weightlifting, can lead to male infertility. On the other hand, no exercise can result in an increased risk of fertility issues.

We’ve always been told that too much of a good thing is bad, and a healthy balance of exercise is essential. That includes a range of intense to moderate workouts, depending on your body requirements.

Before starting a new exercise routine, we recommend that you always advise your trainer about your plans for conception or consult a doctor.

What Is the Impact of Exercise on Your Fertility?

A lean physique can increase the chances of a low sperm count and difficulty conceiving. If tests confirm you have a low sperm count, you will likely have to go through fertility treatment to have a baby.

The same issue arises if you’re overweight. You may still experience fertility issues in conceiving because of a hormonal imbalance. Before planning to conceive a child, it makes sense to visit a doctor to understand your body type and if it is conducive to having a baby.

Studies also show that intense or rigorous exercise reduces testosterone levels and, in turn, sperm count.

If you’re a regular at a gym for muscle building and take steroids, for example, you may also experience fertility issues. Steroids in particular shrink the size of the testicles and negatively impact sperm count. As a result, the natural conception process is more difficult.

How to Know If Your Sperm Count Is Low

Although it is tricky to establish a correlation between exercise for sperm count or muscle building, there have been reports of lower sperm counts in males who frequently visit gyms.

That being said, other factors affect sperm counts in men, not just the gym. Those include, but are not limited to:

  • Lifestyle
  • Genetics
  • Environment

However, if you haven’t been able to conceive yet, we would advise you to seek medical help to understand your sperm count and what you can do to boost it.

What You Need To Do

If you love the gym but have been having difficulty conceiving, we recommend that you reduce your gym visits and do exercises that don’t affect your reproductive system. Lighter workouts and a mix of steady cardio and weights are more advisable.

We are not discouraging you from going to the gym, but moderate workouts are better for your overall health. There are no studies to suggest moderate exercise affects your testosterone loss or sperm count.

Always seek information from a specialist fertility doctor, such as at Advance Fertility, to understand the exercises that help you conceive. It is not difficult to increase your sperm count with moderate exercise and a healthy approach to gym workouts.
